Hints for using third party software

In general, users need to be able to access software by adding a directory to the list of directories used for commands. That is called the search path and Unix uses a shell variable called path to keep track of those directories.

csh/tcsh users should add the following to their .cshrc file:

       set path = (NEWDIR $path)

sh/ksh users should add the following to their .profile file:

       PATH=NEWDIR:$PATH; export PATH

where NEWDIR is shown below for the software that you need.

If you do not know which shell you are using, enter 'ps' to show processes.
