Strings, Kansas! Using Internet2 to Connect University String Students to 4th and 5th Graders

   Robyn Duvall, Wichita State University
   John Harrison, Wichita State University

Strings, Kansas!, sponsored by Kan-ed and the Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall, was launched Fall 2006 and runs each academic year. The program connects Wichita State University (WSU) School of Music string students to over 600 4th and 5th graders in communities throughout Kansas without string programs in their public schools. Working with general music teachers in the participating communities, WSU students use Internet2 videoconferencing to engage the participating youth --- fostering their appreciation of music, stringed instruments and the orchestral repertoire. Still in its first year, Strings, Kansas! is already having a significant impact. As one WSU student shared: "At Flint Hills E.S., half a class of twenty started resounding, 'Let me play the violin,' 'Can I get a cello?,' ... We're the people who are going to make this happen, for the kids and with the help of the kids. ... There are at least ten kids in Rosalia Kansas (and hundreds of others in other places) aching to start exercising a musical potential within themselves that could possibly become the most intense and positive thread of their entire growth and existence, and that the foundation of their present hope of doing so is, essentially, us.

The WSU trombone class participated in 3nd annual "Slide Heard 'Round the World!", an Internet2 project originating from Wheaton College as part of International Trombone Week. It was also webcast on Kan-ed Live!  Wheaton College reported "WOW! That was incredible! Thank you both so much. People are IMing and emailing me left-and-right now. They are raving about you and your studio, Russ! And the technical folks are raving about you and your network team, Indika! Great work! Congratulations on an outstanding International Trombone Week highlight!".

Trombone lessons, via Web

New technology links students with pros

The trombone students played their jazzy rendition of Scarborough Fair, then looked up at the screen for a response. The three New World Symphony fellows via live Internet2 feed in Miami clapped, then played a sonata. The Wichita State University students then played solos, and the pros critiqued them. Back and forth, the exchange went for two hours.

WSU music professor Russ Widener dubbed the class Tuesday "The Slides of March." It was also Webcast for viewing over the Kan-ed Live network, a network of schools, libraries and hospitals meant to expand distance education.

"It's like taking a trombone lesson," Widener said. "And yet you don't have to fly to Miami to do it."

Though the university has had Internet2 technology since 2001, it is still trying to find ways to encourage more professors to use it. About 12 professors regularly use live feeds in their classes now, said John Matrow, director of the high performance computing center at WSU. More than 200 universities nationwide have the technology, which can very quickly transfer large amounts of data.

Internet2 Mission: Develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet.

Tomorrow's Internet will change the world: It will transform the way universities teach students, researchers share knowledge and businesses server customers. Internet2 is driving the process to make this possible. By bringing together the best minds in academia, government and industry, Internet2 is the catalyst for inventing the future.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Internet2?

Internet2 is a consortium being led by over 170 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today´s Internet in its infancy. The primary goals of Internet2 are to:

  • Create a leading edge network capability for the national research community
  • Enable revolutionary Internet applications
  • Ensure the rapid transfer new network services and applications to the broader Internet community.

What can Internet2 do for me as a faculty member?

If you are a faculty member with a need for data communication with other Internet2 connected sites including sites on Abilene, the vBNS, several federal agency networks and international research and education networks that is fast and predictable, this will be of use to you.

What can Internet2 do for me as a staff member?

Staff that work closely with faculty or graduate student researchers are the most likely to use Internet2 services, although Internet2 is available to all staff when they communicate with other Internet2 connected sites. Internet2 will eventually impact staff as new tools are deployed into the commodity Internet which provide all users with higher speed access.

What can Internet2 do for me as a student?

Graduate students doing their own research in collaboration with other students or faculty or who need access to specialized instruments, facilities or services at other Internet2 connected sites will make the most use of Internet2. Undergraduate students who are working closely with faculty researchers may also make extensive use of Internet2. Internet2 will eventually impact students as new tools are deployed into the commodity Internet which provide all users with higher speed access.

What grant opportunities are available for Internet2-related projects?

November 10 is Information Technology Conference
November 11 is Kansas Internet2 Day
November 12 is Global Learning Conference 2004

Governor Sebelius has declared
*** KanEd, Internet2 and Global Learning Week *
**

Our third annual Internet2 Day at Wichita State University has taken on a whole new character. This year a statewide collaborative effort takes center stage as the first-ever Kansas Internet2 Day features innovative and practical applications of advanced networking technology.  The program highlights ten projects funded by Kan-ed to expand and enhance interactive distance education, online professional development for staff in hospitals and libraries, and K20 collaborative learning projects.  Kan-ed is the statewide broadband network for Kansas hospitals, K-12 school districts, libraries, and institutions of higher education.  As a unit of the Kansas Board of Regents, Kan-ed represents a statewide partnership for the development of Internet2 collaborative activities among members and sponsored education group participants. An estimated 75% of the Kansas hospitals, K-12 school districts, libraries, and higher education institutions have joined Kan-ed.

Keynote speaker is Dr. Dean Zollman of Kansas State University. He is a distinguished professor and chair of the physics department. He is also recipient of the NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award, 2004. In recent years, he has concentrated on the use of technology for teaching physics and on providing materials to physics teachers, particularly those teachers whose background does not include a significant amount of physics.

The Schedule is here.

Global Learning Conference 2004 is very interesting because there will be at least 6 sessions using Internet2.

Register at this web site and here is a campus map. Presentations are in the CAC Theater and exhibitors are in the Rhatigan Student Center ballroom. Bring your business cards for their door prize drawings. Wireless will be available in both locations.

Sponsors are listed here.

On April 6, the WSU trombone class participated in 2nd annual "Slide Heard 'Round the World!", an Internet2 project originating from Wheaton College. WSU senior Tristan Fitzwater, accompanied by Tate Addis, performed two movements from Christopher Brubeck's Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra. Master teacher Gabe Langford, Brown University,  remarked "Sounds really fantastic. I don't have any comment to make about that. You clearly have command of the horn and you understand the style of the piece and it just sounds fantastic. More power to you. I don't see that we can add to that. Sounds fantastic." This also reflects on the quality of our broadcast.

On April 8, the WSU trombone class listened to Steve Shires, master trombone builder.
